How to Set Up Open Graph Tags

Four steps from blank page to branded share cards on every platform.

1

Pick the right og:type

website for home and landing pages, article for blog posts, product for e-commerce, video.other for video-first pages. Type matters — each unlocks extra schema fields.

2

Design a 1200×630 image

One image works for Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp. Keep the logo and key text inside the middle 1000×525 safe area — the edges get cropped on some platforms.

3

Add type-specific tags

Articles get published_time, author, and tags. Products get price and availability. These lift CTR on LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google Shopping.

4

Re-scrape with official debuggers

Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector, and WhatsApp business tools all cache aggressively. Re-scrape after every change so the new card surfaces.

Open Graph Image Specs Per Platform

Follow 1200×630 for universal coverage — but here's the platform-by-platform detail.

Facebook

1200 × 630

1.91:1 ratio. Minimum 600×315, recommended 1200×630. Text under 20% of image area ranks higher.

LinkedIn

1200 × 627

Uses OG image tags. LinkedIn caches share images aggressively — re-scrape via Post Inspector after changes.

WhatsApp

300 × 300 minimum

Reads OG image but displays as square thumbnail on mobile. Large images are letterboxed.

Slack

Uses OG image

Slack unfurls use OG tags. 1200×630 works perfectly — image displays below title and description.

Discord

Uses OG image

Discord unfurls use OG tags. Similar treatment to Slack — image shown in a bordered embed.

iMessage (Apple)

Uses OG image

Apple's Rich Link preview reads OG tags. Prefers square or 1.91:1. Shows above sender's message.

Pinterest

1000 × 1500 preferred

Pinterest prefers tall vertical imagery. Use a separate image for Pinterest Rich Pins — 2:3 ratio.

Twitter / X

1200 × 628

Twitter cards use a separate meta namespace, but most tags fall back to OG if Twitter tags are missing.

What Open Graph Actually Controls

Every platform, app and bot that unfurls links reads OG tags. Getting them right is one deploy away from better CTR everywhere.

Open Graph FAQ

Do I need Twitter tags if I have OG tags?

Twitter falls back to OG when Twitter-specific tags are missing. You only need twitter:card and twitter:site for accurate analytics attribution.

Why does my image not show?

Usually caching. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger to re-scrape. Second most common: image under 600×315 (the absolute minimum) or image blocked by robots.txt.

Is my input sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Can I use the same image for every page?

Yes, but CTR drops. Unique per-page images lift social CTR 25–80% depending on platform. Use a templated system to generate them at scale.
