Readability Scores
Paste at least 20 words with proper sentence punctuation to get reliable readability scores.
How to Use the Readability Analyzer
Five minutes with this tool will tell you whether your copy reads like a news article, a textbook, or a legal contract.
Paste a full paragraph or more
Short snippets give unstable scores. Drop in at least 100 words — a full blog intro or landing-page hero section works best.
Check the average grade level
The summary card blends five grade-level formulas. For most Australian consumer sites, a Grade 7–9 reading level converts best. Above Grade 12, you'll lose mobile readers fast.
Use Flesch Reading Ease for marketing copy
Shoot for 60+ on Flesch Reading Ease. That's the "standard" zone used by newspapers and top-performing marketing pages. Above 70 is ideal for top-of-funnel content.
Rewrite to bring scores down
Split long sentences. Swap long words for short ones. Cut jargon. Every sentence above 20 words and every three-syllable word you remove measurably lifts readability.
What the Scores Actually Mean
Every formula measures readability slightly differently. Here's how to read each one at a glance.
Flesch Reading Ease
Higher is easier. Aim for 60+ for blogs, 70+ for landing pages, 80+ for email and social copy.
Flesch-Kincaid Grade
Matches a US school grade level. Most best-performing web copy sits here regardless of industry.
Gunning Fog Index
Measures years of formal education needed. Above 12 signals dense, jargon-heavy writing.
SMOG Index
Best for health, government, and regulatory content. Built from polysyllable density.

Readability FAQ
Which score should I optimise for?
For Australian B2C sites, Flesch Reading Ease 60+ and Flesch-Kincaid Grade 7–9 is the sweet spot. For B2B or technical content, you can push to Grade 10–12 without hurting conversions.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Every formula runs locally in your browser. Your content stays on your device.
Why do the scores disagree?
Each formula weights sentence length, word length, and syllables differently. Use the blended average for quick calls; look at individual scores when you're fine-tuning.
Does Google use readability as a ranking factor?
Not directly. But readability drives dwell time, scroll depth, and CTR — all of which Google does use. Better readability, better rankings over time.
