How to Design SEO-Friendly Slugs
Four rules that separate clean, rankable URLs from the messy auto-generated kind.
Lead with the primary keyword
Put the keyword users search for at the start of the slug. "how-to-rank-in-australia" beats "guide-to-ranking-in-your-local-australian-market".
Hyphens beat underscores
Google treats hyphens as word separators but underscores as word-joiners. "best_seo_tools" reads as one word to Google. Always use hyphens.
Strip filler, keep meaning
Remove "a", "the", "of", "to" when they don't change meaning. Keep numbers, nouns, and core modifiers — they carry query intent.
Don't change slugs after launch
Changing a live slug breaks every inbound link and loses its history. If you must, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.
Slug Best Practices
The building blocks of a URL that reads well and ranks well.
Length under 60
Aim for under 60 characters. Google truncates long slugs in SERPs and long URLs get fewer clicks.
Lowercase only
Mixed case creates duplicate-content issues on case-sensitive servers (Apache, Nginx).
No dates for evergreen
Skip /2026/ for guides you'll update. Keep /2026/ in news URLs where time is the story.
Numbers are fine
"10-best-seo-tools" ranks well. Numbers survive transliteration and improve CTR.
No query params
Clean paths (/product/leather-boots) outrank and outshare query strings (/product?id=123).
Avoid symbols
&, %, @, + require URL encoding and break on copy-paste. Substitute or strip them.
Unicode? Transliterate
"café" → "cafe". Unicode URLs work in modern browsers but look ugly in logs, referrers, and old clients.
One topic per slug
Don't cram two topics in one slug. Use separate pages — each can rank for its own keyword cluster.

URL Slug FAQ
Should I include a date in my slug?
Only for time-sensitive content (news, event recaps). For evergreen guides, skip dates — they make older content look stale even when it's been updated.
Do longer slugs hurt SEO?
Only marginally. The bigger risk is truncation in SERPs and lower CTR. Aim for under 60 characters where possible, but don't chop meaningful words just to hit a limit.
Can I use non-English characters?
Yes, but test. Modern browsers handle Unicode slugs fine, but analytics, referrers, and link shortenings often mangle them. Transliterate for safety.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
