What Is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?
Definition
The ratio of users who click on a specific link to the total number of users who view a page, email, or advertisement.
Why It Matters
CTR measures genuine engagement — clicking requires active intent, unlike passive impressions or opens. Whether in email, paid ads, or organic search, a low CTR signals your message is not resonating with your audience, even when visibility is high.
How It Works
CTR is calculated as (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100. In email, it measures how many recipients clicked a link. In Google Ads, it measures how many people who saw the ad clicked it. In organic search, Google Search Console shows CTR per query — and combining average position with CTR reveals whether your title tags and meta descriptions are compelling enough to earn clicks.
A gym equipment retailer's Google Ads campaign has a 0.8% CTR. After rewriting ad copy to lead with "Free 2-Day Shipping + 30-Day Returns" instead of product names alone, CTR rises to 3.1% — significantly reducing cost per conversion without any bid changes.
Quick Facts

- Position 1 in organic search averages a 28% CTR — position 10 averages under 3%
- CTR benchmarks vary significantly by industry, device type, and keyword match type
- In email marketing, CTR is a more reliable engagement signal than open rate post-Apple MPP
